Sixth grade takes a five day trip to the Four Corners region. Taking a commercial bus north, we usually stop along the way to hike the Lava Trail loop at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and later walk along the rim overlook to view Betatakin ruins. Our destination is the campus of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, just outside of Cortez, Colorado. We spend the next four days investigating archaeological methods and exploring Ancestral Puebloan culture. Students participate in Pueblo games, pit-dwelling adventures, and simulated digs. Nights are spent in cozy hogans, with all nutritious meals served in the dining hall. When time and weather permit, we climb to the ruins at Mesa Verde National Park and top off our travels with a hike into Canyon de Chelly National Monument to see White House Ruin.
