The study of science opens children’s eyes to the wonder of the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to provide students with a rich and comprehensive foundation in science, aligned with the National Science Education Standards. Moreover, we endeavor to make science relevant, interesting, and challenging for all children. Our teachers, who have specialized backgrounds in science instruction, develop in their students key reasoning and problem-solving skills, using the scientific method, and foster curiosity, a respect for evidence, and a sensitivity for all living things.
From the dissection of owl pellets to investigations of life in our lush Wetlands area, science activities contribute to children’s understanding of the natural world and provide opportunities for collaboration in group activities. Instruction is inquiry-based and hands-on. Studies of life science, physical science, and earth science spiral over the course of the elementary grades as students reexamine concepts in progressively greater depth. A $100,000 grant awarded by the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation in 2008 will endow our science programs and fund the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment and technology for years to come.
Highlights of the St. Michael’s science program include:
- the study of the structures of life, water and climate, and measuring matter in third grade
- students’ first exposure to Science Fair in fourth grade
- the study of living systems, Sun and Moon, and mixtures and solutions in fifth grade
- age-appropriate units on hygiene, nutrition, and safety
- optional participation in a city-wide Focus on Optics competition, held at St. Michael’s
